Workplace Health and Safety
North American leaders in workplace health and safety have issued a call to raise awareness in young workers for safety in the workplace.
Studies have shown that in the first few weeks that young workers are over five times more likely to sustain an injury while on the job.
The majority of the younger workforce is eager to please their employer and as a result the fear of termination is at the forefront of their minds. These thoughts take away focus of on the job safety and in wanting to ensure all duties are executed, some take short cuts to fulfill their workday tasks. Sadly, approximately 1% of the younger workforce is killed as a result of work related accidents and/or injuries.
As part of the campaign to raise awareness for workplace health and safety, young workers are encouraged to take responsibility for their safety. In fact, these workers are educated as part of the campaign that they can and should refuse to perform unsafe work. The law is clear - workers can’t be terminated for taking a stand and refusing to perform unsafe work.
The law is also clear that employers who ignore workers safety concerns will not be tolerated.
Workplace Health & Safety Training
Apart from safety training and workplace safety meetings, health and workplace safety messages are transmitted to the workers. These messages are in various forms of communication.
A large number of employees may find regular health and safety meetings and training to be routine and may not be focused during these meetings. In these cases, unfortunately, workers are not mindful of safety issues and may become slack in this regard.
To overcome the routine workplace health and safety training, innovative training sessions have been incorporated into organizations training programs.
One of the most effective means of workplace health and safety training is through interactive workplace health and safety games.
There are a number of workplace safety games varying in nature to suit different organizations or industries. Some of these games are versatile and may be suited for a variety of workplaces.
In addition to offering a new and creative way to ensure the message of workplace health and safety is forefront in workers minds, these safety games for the workplace can also encourage team building and improve employee relations.
Team building is extremely important because workers will actually feel more compelled to follow health and safety rules for the benefit of their colleagues. Employees will watch out for one another and may also feel more comfortable in speaking out against performing duties that are not felt to be safe.
Safety Games for the Workplace
There are a few common work safety games that can be played with very little explanation. The rules are simple and encourage workers to practice workplace safety.
Safety Bingo
For approximately 20 years, this game has proven to be a very effective game in drastically reducing accidents and workers compensation claims.
The prize can be anything - cash or gift certificates or an actual prize.
Because most people are familiar with the game Bingo - there is little to explain.
The object of the game is to get five numbers in a row (or four if using the free space). The first person to make a line wins the prize. The caveat to this game is if there is an accident or injury, the game must be restarted.
Safety Jackpot
This is another great workplace safety game and again, the reduction in accidents and injury by improving workplace safety is quite noticeable.
Employees are rewarded when they observe safety standards, therefore workers are quite anxious to play this free workplace safety game.
Safety Jackpot is a unique safety awareness and incentive program with a track record of success in improving workplace safety. The game is designed to create a workplace environment where safety awareness stays on the top of employees’ minds and to reward employees for observing safety standards. This game may either be played with teams or individually.
The object of this game is to scratch off game cards. These game cards are distributed only to those workers who exhibit or practice workplace safety. As long as workplace health and safety practices or rules for the organization are being observed, the employee or team will receive a scratch card.
