Spinal Arthritis Causes

Spinal Arthritis

Most instances of spinal arthritis are not due to a single culprit, but are in fact the result of the culmination of multiple factors. These spinal arthritis causes can include:

  • Age – The most common of spinal arthritis causes. This is because as the body ages, it naturally loses water content in the cartilage, including that in the spine which allow the facet joints to glide smoothly. This more brittle cartilage can breakdown and allow the joints to rub against one another, leading to spinal arthritis.
  • Gender – Women are more likely than men to develop the condition, although it is not an uncommon issue for the male sex.
  • Weight – Those who are overweight or obese are also at an increased risk for development of the disease. This is due to the fact that the extra pounds they carry put excess pressure on the spine, wearing down cartilage in the joints faster.
  • Lifestyle – People who lead more physically demanding lives, such as those with jobs that require a lot of physical labor, or those who enjoy playing sports that stress the joints, are more likely to experience spinal arthritis. This likelihood is increased if these activities result in back injuries.
  • Injury – A traumatic incident like a car accident can increase your risk for developing spinal arthritis.
