Sciatica Causes Can Be Treated at Laser Spine Institute

Sciatica causes can vary, but the effects are often the same - pain, weakness, tingling, numbness, and more in the lower back, behind the thigh, and down the calf into the bottom of the foot. Sufferers often find it difficult or even painful to stand or sit for extended periods, bend their backs, sneeze, cough, or even laugh. Needless to say, in many cases sciatica causes a decreased quality of life. Thankfully, the experts at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) specialize in treating sciatica causes and can help you return to a normal life.

These causes include:

  • Bulging Disc - When a disc’s outer layer is weakened, usually by age-related degeneration, it can push or “bulge” out in a certain area. If the bulge is found in the lower back and extends far enough in the right area, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Herniated Disc - Similar to a bulging disc, a herniated disc is usually caused by degenerative disc disease related to aging. However, in this instance the disc’s fibrous outer layer actually splits, and the jelly-like inside of the disc leaks out and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Arthritis - Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage between joints gradually degenerates, leaving the bones of that joint exposed and causing them to rub against one another. This rubbing can cause the bones to produce protective structures known as bone spurs. When bone spurs form in the lower spine, they can impinge on the sciatic nerve, in turn causing sciatica.
