Avoid Back Pain with Some Simple Tips

Avoid Back Pain with Some Simple Tips

It isn’t difficult to avoid back pain, if you follow some simple guidelines designed to help prevent back conditions like pinched nerves, herniated discs, and others.

Here are some tips for maintaining a pain-free back:

  • Maintain good posture. This is one of the easiest ways to avoid back pain. Whether you are sitting or standing, try to maintain a straight back by not slouching. This can be a hard habit to adopt, so keep this in mind even when you’re relaxing on the couch or waiting in line at the bank.  Also, be mindful of your posture while lying down. It helps to have mattress that provides ample support for your back and a pillow that provides the same for your neck.
  • Stretch and strengthen your back. Incorporate exercises into your day that will build up the muscles supporting your spinal column and increase their flexibility. Building your overall core strength can also help you avoid injuries and back pain. Some activities, including Pilates and yoga, are particularly well suited for this.
  • Be aware when lifting and bending. If you need to pick something up off the floor or another low surface, squat down, grab it with both hands, and use your leg strength to stand back up. Never bend at the waist and pull with your back. If you think something is too heavy for you to lift or carry, leave it for someone else or use a tool like a dolly to move it.

Even when using these techniques, you can’t always avoid back pain. Some conditions are genetic or are caused by an unavoidable injury or another factor. Fortunately, most back pain can be treated effectively with simple approaches like non-prescription medication, rest, limitation of activities, massage, and stretching. Sometimes, back pain even resolves itself with time. For a small portion of the population, however, more aggressive techniques like spinal steroid injections or surgery are needed. If you find yourself in this group, you may want to consider treatment at Laser Spine Institute (LSI). We offer minimally invasive treatments to those who are unable to avoid back pain.
